While the entire island is accessible by car, you need to choose a general side of the island to stay on. The North shore is best known for its "island feel", less tourists, windsurfing, kiteboarding, wind, and waves. The South shore is known for its long beaches, affordability, many tourists, sunsets, and flat water. Locations like Wailea and Makena meet the high end market needs. The West shore is a tourist destination known for Lahaina's front street, white sand beaches, and many hotel chains.
